[FAQ Hong Kong] Do I need to buy an Octopus card?

Octopus is an electronic payment system using a contactless smart card known as "Octopus" which includes Octopus cards and products. You can use it for pay everything like train, bus, buy food, product in 7-11, in almost anywhere! and it was super cool, you just tap and go (so convenient!)

but, if you just stay for a week in HK, Do you really need to buy?

Before you buy, you must aware several things

1. You must deposit 50 HKD
2. If you returned the card within 90 days of issue, they will minus 9 HKD from your deposit (as the administration fee if i'm not mistaken)
3. If your Octopus has been damaged, they will minus 30 HKD from your deposit
4. You will get discount for MTR (not bus)

So, you must take several notes to decide whether you must buy the card or not:

1. If you are traveling around HK and will absolutely using MRT, better buy one
2. If you are traveling and deciding to use bus and taxi everywhere, better don't buy
